6 Day Priorat Wine Exploration

6 Day Priorat Wine Exploration

From Rioja and Albariño to Cava and Sherry, Spain is a wine lover’s paradise. Located in Western Europe, the country is known for its diverse wine regions, each with their own iconic varietals, and a rich wine culture. It is home to famous wine regions such as Rioja, Ribera del Duero, and Priorat, which produce popular wines such as Tempranillo, Garnacha, and Graciano.

The New Old World. Spanish bodegas are producing bold new styles attractive to the adventurous, alongside established successes. This exciting union of ‘new’ and ‘old’ manifests itself in places beyond the vineyards. Architecture enthusiasts will be thrilled to find 13th century medieval villages tucked closely alongside the modern Bilbao landmark of Frank Gehry’s Guggenheim Museum. Your palette too will be pleased to explore the traditional and contemporary, while discovering the true art of tapas, shopping for ingredients in Barcelona’s Boqueria market, or delighting in a master wine tasting in an underground 15th century cellar.

Daily Summary

Barcelona Exploration

Today, you will be joined by your expert local guide for a half day visit of the architectural, cultural, and historical neighborhoods of Barcelona.

You’ll begin in the very heart of the Gothic Quarter: the beautiful Plaza Nova. Located in front of an old Roman city gate, you’ll start your discovery of Barcelona with a focus on Roman city planning and architecture. Next, you’ll head to the awe-inspiring main Cathedral, using this late Gothic masterpiece as a backdrop for discussing the medieval evolution of Barcelona.

Your adventure through the enchanting cobblestoned streets will take you into El Call, the Jewish neighborhood established in the Middle Ages. Here you’ll learn about the vacillating periods of relative religious freedom and periods of intolerance that have marked Catalan and Spanish history.

Next, you’ll wander through the El Born area, characterized by narrow medieval streets that nowadays are home to many boutiques and cafes. Continuing past La Boqueria, Barcelona’s main market, you will emerge onto the city’s most famous street, known as Las Ramblas, the perfect setting to discuss the modern development of the city in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Using your newfound knowledge, enjoy the rest of the day at your own pace, discovering the city as you wish.

Day 3: Priorat Wine Touring

Daily Summary

Priorat Wine Touring

This morning, you will be met by your private guide in Barcelona at your hotel. Set out to discover the nearby wine region of Priorat before checking into your hotel in Priorat. Spend the day getting to know the incredibly beautiful and rugged region, with it's steep hills covered from top to bottom in craggy vines.

We'll begin with a visit at one of the wineries that was one of the first of the modern Priorat renaissance in wine making, also happens to be one of the prettiest vineyards, and most informative visits.

After this wonderful visit, we will head to Gratallops. This tiny town is at the forefront of wine production in the area. We’ll visit a winery also known for being one of the first in the region and is quite a charming character. While there, you'll enjoy a fantastic, traditional lunch in the winery. While eating lunch, we will pair each dish with one of their wines, getting to taste their full range. Following lunch, we will head to the charming little town of Porrera, about a 20 min drive away and head to meet with the owners of a family-run winery to tour their beautiful vineyards and taste their fabulous vintages. Our wine trips are designed to be relaxed, personal, flexible and fun. We are almost always the only guests at these establishments during our scheduled visit, which enables us to have a very special visit, tasting and meal, and ensures that we have the undivided attention of the winemakers for any questions that one might want to ask. Following this authentic local experience, with full bellies, we will head to your new accommodation to check-in for a relaxing evening.
