8 Day Sardinian Serenity: Wine, Beaches, and Mediterranean Magic

8 Day Sardinian Serenity: Wine, Beaches, and Mediterranean Magic

Sardinia is renowned for its breathtaking natural beauty, rich history, and vibrant culture. Located to the west of mainland Italy, it boasts a diverse landscape that includes rugged mountains, pristine beaches, and fertile plains dotted with vineyards. Sardinia's wines reflect its unique terroir, characterized by a combination of Mediterranean climate, varied microclimates, and distinctive soil types. Among Sardinia's most famous regions is the area of Gallura. Here, the dominant grape variety is Vermentino, a white grape that thrives in the region's granite-based soils and benefits from the cooling influence of sea breezes. Sardinian Vermentino wines are typically crisp, aromatic, and refreshing, with notes of citrus, tropical fruits, and minerality. Sardinia is also known for its indigenous grape varieties such as Cannonau, Nuragus, Monica, and Bovale Sardo. Cannonau, in particular, has gained international recognition for producing full-bodied red wines with rich flavors of ripe berries, herbs, and spices.

Day 2: Parteolla Wine Touring

Daily Summary

Parteolla Wine Touring

Meet your guide this morning and head out for a day exploring the Parteolla Region, where some of the most famous wineries in Sardinia come from. Vines, olive trees and fruit orchards lend a profusion of green shades and scents to an area steeped in history and tradition. The Parteolla area is a must-see for anyone wishing to immerse themselves in nature and enjoy some good wine served with delicious dairy products and a slice of bread seasoned with the fragrant oil produced in the area.

Begin the day with a visit to an estate such as Argiolas Winery, one of the largest and well-known estates in the islands, for a tour and tasting. Argiolas is the foremost wine estate on the island of Sardinia producing archetypal wines from native varietals. Antonio Argiolas, who died in 2009 at the age of 102, inherited seven acres of vines from his father in 1938 and was the first on the island to convert to modern viticulture to pursue quality over quantity.

We will stop for lunch at a local restaurant featuring fresh produce and traditional Sardinian dishes.

After lunch, you will be welcomed this afternoon to a small family-owned winery, Antonella Corda. The story of this winery is deeply connected to that of its founder, Antonella Corda. Grew up among the vineyards in a family of winegrowers for generations. Her mother gave her a love for the land, and her father instilled in her a passion for the job. Antonella became an agronomist specializing in wine-making management and inherited the family tradition in 2010. Spend time hearing Antonella's story during your tour and tasting.

If interested, on the way back to your hotel this afternoon, we will stop by one of the stunning beaches along the amazing coastline. The evening is free for you to relax and enjoy dinner at a local venue.

Cheese and Wine in Nuoro
Daily Summary

From Southern to Northern Sardinia Wine Touring

After breakfast this morning, check out of your hotel and meet your guide and depart together towards Northern Sardinia. Along the way you will discover the true heart and soul of the island.

Commence your day with an exploration of the charming village of Orgosolo, renowned for its rebellious spirit rooted in the traditions of local shepherds, vividly depicted in its captivating mural paintings.

Cannonau di Sardegna stands as the epitome of Sardinian viticulture, flourishing across the island's fertile lands. Crafted from Cannonau grapes, known as Grenache in international circles, it represents one of Sardinia's most esteemed wine varietals. Today's itinerary includes an immersive excursion through the Nuoro region, where you'll have the pleasure of indulging in guided tours and tastings at two distinguished wineries.

For a delectable midday reprieve, a table awaits you in Nuoro at a quintessential local eatery, offering a culinary journey through regional specialties like zuppa gallurese and pane carasau.

During the day, you will have the opportunity to taste and buy the famous pecorino cheese of Sardinia. The millions of sheep that graze the vast stretches of meadows throughout Sardinian are an iconic feature of the landscape. They are farmed in much the same way as they have been for hundreds of years. The sheep’s milk cheese, Pecorino, is without doubt the most famous of the island’s cheeses. Today you will have the opportunity to taste three Sardinian cheeses protected by the Denomination of Protected origin (DOP): the Sardinian pecorino cheese, the Roman pecorino cheese and the Sardinian Fiore cheese.

Your guide will transfer you to your new accommodations at the end of the afternoon.

Day 5: Tavolara Island Private Boat tour

Tavolara Island Private Boat tour
Daily Summary

Private Boat Tour to Tavolara Island

This morning, immerse yourself in the beauty of Tavolara Marine Area along the stunning Sardinian coastline. The area includes marine and coastal habitats teeming with fish, marine life, animals, and some of the island’s most spectacular beaches.

Cruise in the direction of Proratora island, where you can admire the spectacular Grotta del Forno, which has the peculiarity of being connected by a natural chimney to the surface of the island's summit. Our next stop will be the Molara Pools, famous for the crystal-clear waters, where we will make a 30-minute stop where you can swim and snorkel trying to spot the wonderful fish that inhabit these waters.

We will then cruise to Tavolara, where we will dock at the island's small port for an hour stop on our own, to have lunch in one of the many typical restaurants, or to walk along the path that connects Cala Tramontana beach with Spalmatore beach.

Back on the boat, we will cruise to Cala Tartaruga, Sassi Piatti, Isola Piana and spiaggia del Dottore where we will make more stops for swimming before returning to Spiaggia la Salinedda where our adventure will come to an end.

Day 6: Wine and Village Touring in Gallura

Wine and Village Touring in Gallura
Daily Summary

Vermentino and Cannonau Discovery

Check out of your hotel and meet your guide at your hotel. Set out today to discover the Gallura Region and taste the popular Sardinian wine, Vermentino—a light-bodied, deliciously complex white wine similar in style to Sauvignon Blanc. Because Vermentino is still quite unknown, you can find high-quality wines for a great value.

You will be welcomed for a visit to Vigne Surrau winery for a tour and tasting. The two core values that underpin the company's philosophy are tradition and innovation: tradition is their guide in choosing the grape varieties to be cultivated, native grapes such as Vermentino di Gallura DOCG and Cannonau di Sardegna DOC, while innovation guides the winemaking process, where they use state-of-the-art equipment and experimental techniques, such as drying Vermentino and Cannonau grapes. The new Surrau winery building was designed as a place where art would merge with nature.

After your morning tasting, continue with a visit to Porto Cervo and Costa Smeralda. The Costa Smeralda is a stretch of 10km situated between the bay of Arzachena and the Gulf of Cugnana and is perhaps the best-known corner of Sardinia, famous for its beaches and glitzy resorts.

Stop for lunch at a local restaurant before continuing for a visit to San Pantaleo, one of the most charming villages in Sardinia.

As your tour concludes, you will be transferred to your new hotel.
