Portugal and Spain Wine Discovery

Portugal and Spain Wine Discovery

The confluence of Portugal’s wine is truly unique. Their wine-making roots emerged out of ancient civilizations, and, due to centuries of economic isolation preventing trade with other European countries, Portuguese growers were forced to perfect their own grape varieties. In a world long dominated by France, Spain, and Italy, Portugal's wines seem finally to have emerged from the shadows. The country is home to famous wine regions such as the picturesque Douro Valley, which produces the famous Port wine, and the Alentejo region, known for its red wines made from the Touriga Nacional grape. Portugal is also home to the Cork Oak tree and contributes roughly one third of global cork production.

So raise a glass to one of Europe's most underrated wine destinations and discover with us the quality and diversity of Portuguese wines. There is a wealth to explore beyond great ports.

From Rioja and Albariño to Cava and Sherry, Spain is a wine lover’s paradise. Located in Western Europe, the country is known for its diverse wine regions, each with their own iconic varietals, and a rich wine culture. It is home to famous wine regions such as Rioja, Ribera del Duero, and Priorat, which produce popular wines such as Tempranillo, Garnacha, and Graciano.

The New Old World. Spanish bodegas are producing bold new styles attractive to the adventurous, alongside established successes. This exciting union of ‘new’ and ‘old’ manifests itself in places beyond the vineyards. Architecture enthusiasts will be thrilled to find 13th century medieval villages tucked closely alongside the modern Bilbao landmark of Frank Gehry’s Guggenheim Museum. Your palette too will be pleased to explore the traditional and contemporary, while discovering the true art of tapas, shopping for ingredients in Barcelona’s Boqueria market, or delighting in a master wine tasting in an underground 15th century cellar.

The excellence and high quality of their wines are rewarded by recognition and prestige in the most demanding markets both nationally and internationally.

Continue to an estate such as Amaren, meaning "of the mother" in Basque. The first wine under this label appeared in 1995 as a tribute to Ángeles, mother of winemaker Juan Luis Cañas. The estate is comprised of some of Rioja Alavesa’s best and highest altitude vineyards, where the soil is poor and produces small bunches, perfect for making highly concentrated Rioja wines. The vineyard-zone stretches over an area of 65 hectares, where ancient vine plants of 35 to 110 years old are cultivated.

A traditional Riojan lunch, either at a winery or in a local restaurant, will give you more opportunities to taste the wonderful Riojan wines. This afternoon, visit a third producer or alternatively visit the medieval village of Laguardia, encircled by 13th-century walls. Sarah Spitzer

Trip Designer

Sarah’s career in travel started as a welcomed side effect of living throughout the US, Europe, Asia, Middle East, as an operations officer in the U.S. Army.  Her exposure to vastly different countries sparked her interests in learning about history, people, food, and culture.

Although she has always been a wine lover, she became passionate about it during her time living in Europe, where she earned her level 3 WSET certification and worked in wine sales.  Traveling the world has been the most enriching adventure of Sarah’s life, and the more  memories she makes, the more important it is for her to help other people have those experiences too.

Currently based in Nuremberg, Germany, Sarah is the first point of contact for European bound guests whilst on trip. She takes advantage of her central location, regularly exploring the wine regions of Europe. Most recently she travelled to the Island of Elba, off the coast of Italy, a little known wine region with stunning beaches, archaelogical sites and year round sun. Her next getaway will be across the border to Alsace, France to explore quaint towns and towering castles whilst enjoying  some renowned Riesling and Gewürztraminer.
